Thoreau School Programs

Concord Recreation is exited to be working with the Thoreau Elementary School PTG and Administration to now oversee the before and afterschool recreation programs!  These classes are available to Thoreau students, only.

Morning String Orchestra

The String Orchestra before school program is for students who have been studying basic skills since September and can play the first three notes on the D string by January. The program is suitable for 4th-year beginner students or second-year + players (5th graders). Join to further develop your ensemble playing skills on your string instrument. This is an extra enrichment class that is meant to augment your child's ensemble skills and introduce them to their first ensemble experience or add to the existing orchestra class. This class is not meant to replace group skills classes. It's fun to make music all together!

Kids Test Kitchen

Kids’ Test Kitchen is on a mission to get young eaters cooking, tasting, and thinking about healthy ingredients! Let’s continue to redefine kid food; one lesson, and one child at a time!

Lego Challenges

If you love building with Legos, this is the class for you! Each week you will be challenged to create a sensational Lego scene. Each challenge is a mystery that your teacher will reveal – A helicopter rescue scene? A space shuttle launch site? Lego Godzilla attacking a city?? Best be ready for anything! Then it’s off to the races as you and a partner have limited time to create your scene and present it to the class. Presentation skills will be key as you try to persuade your classmates that your Lego creation is #1. Our Right Brain Curriculum Instructors will help you use persuasive language, eye contact and proper posture for perfected presentations. Legos and Public Speaking, now that’s a match!

Shark Tank Jr

Got an idea for a side-less taco, a shirt that never stains, or a no-spill baby bottle? Then it’s time to put on your inventor’s hat and design the business of your dreams! As our Right Brain Curriculum teachers get you up to speed on business plans, competition, budgets, and presentation skills, you will bring your one-of-a-kind idea to life. You will design your flagship store, write and perform in your own TV commercial, and create a prototype of a product that will change the lives of millions. Armed with your “elevator pitch,” you will present your business and persuade your audience to get behind your big idea! Let’s get those wheels turning — it’s time to take care of business!

Buildwave

Want to spark your child's interest in STEM? Buildwave is an innovative building program that feels like a video game! Over 6 sessions, your child will create with over 50 different building materials, including Legos, PlusPlus, and much more! Each session is a new "level" of the game, with an energetic audiovisual component that guides participants through the different building waves. Throughout, your child will learn design and collaboration fundamentals in a unique and memorable context.

Before School Chess Club

Strengthening young minds since 2006! Kids have fun learning and playing “the most ancient and the most universal game known among [people]”. See the “Joining the Club” post at ChessIsElementary.Substack.com for details.

Umbrella Arts: Mix It Up Media

This program offers a mixture of various art mediums for students to explore what types of art they are passionate about. Fluctuating between 2D and 3D mediums, students will experiment with their skills in new and exciting ways each week.

Umbrella Arts: Ink & Imagination

Foster your students' love for the arts by exploring the fundamentals of basic drawing and painting. Instructor will help guide and encourage creativity through each class.
